H-Beam vs. I-Beam: Navigating European and American Structural Profiles

1. The Mechanics of the “Flange” and “Web” Structural steel profiles are engineered to maximize load-bearing capacity while minimizing weight.

  • H-Beams (Wide Flange): Feature wider flanges and thicker webs. They are the preferred choice for pillars and columns because they offer superior resistance to buckling in multiple directions.
  • I-Beams (IPE/IPN): Feature tapered flanges and narrower profiles. They are primarily used as horizontal support beams where the load is unidirectional.

2. Global Standards Correlation DTC serves a global market where standards often overlap. Understanding the equivalents is key to project success:

  • European Profiles: HEA (Light series), HEB (Standard series), and HEM (Heavy series) governed by EN 10365.
  • British Profiles: UB (Universal Beams) and UC (Universal Columns).
  • American Profiles: W-Sections (Wide Flange) governed by ASTM A6.

3. Structural Hollow Sections (HSS) Beyond beams, DTC provides RHS (Rectangular)SHS (Square), and CHS (Circular) hollow sections. These closed profiles provide high torsional (twisting) stiffness, making them ideal for modern architectural frames and machinery supports.
