ASTM A105 vs. A350 LF2: Understanding Temperature Limits and Material Chemistry

1. The Foundation of Forged Carbon Steel In the PVF industry, choosing the right carbon steel grade is determined by the design temperature of the system.

  • ASTM A105: The standard for forged carbon steel piping components for ambient and higher-temperature service. It is the default material for flanges, fittings, and valves in standard utility and process lines.
  • ASTM A350 LF2: Specifically engineered for Low-Temperature Service. While chemically similar to A105, it undergoes additional heat treatment and impact testing to ensure it remains ductile in freezing environments.

2. Key Differences in Testing The primary differentiator is the Charpy V-Notch Impact Test. A350 LF2 is tested at temperatures as low as -46°C (-50°F) to guarantee that the steel will not undergo a “brittle fracture” (shattering like glass) under pressure in cold climates.

3. Chemistry and Mechanical Properties

  • A105: Tensile Strength 70 ksi (min); no mandatory low-temp impact test.
  • A350 LF2 (Class 1): Tensile Strength 70 ksi (min); mandatory impact energy requirements (typically 20J average).
